Application Building

XML - XML is a markup language similar to html. XML allows us to define a flexible format for data, allowing different programs to transfer information with a minimum of fuss. Thus data held in one format can be shared easily to a wider audience. XML was developed by the W3C (www.w3.org) and as such is free to all users. (http://www.w3.org/XML/)

Java - Widely used programming language created by SUN Microsystems in the 1990s. Whilst it wasn't specifically developed for the internet the technology means that it is widely used and accepted. (http://java.sun.com/)

MySQL - Widely used SQL database which is distributed under the GNU license. Based on SQL it runs on almost all platforms that an organization might need. It's stability and ease of use make it a favourite for embedding into applications where standard database functionality is required. It is used by companies large and small and increasingly is seen as a viable option compared to Oracle, SQL Server etc. (http://www.mysql.com/)
